Public Statement

The Igbo Association Ottawa-Gatineau Canada, watches with dismay the unprecedented crackdown and killings of Nigerian youths over the end SARS peaceful protest in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. The association hereby joins other world organizations including the United Nations and the European Union in demanding an end to police brutality in all parts of Nigeria.

We urge the Nigerian security forces to act at all times with maximum restraint and call on protesters to continue their demonstration peacefully and refrain from violence. We condemn the senseless killing of these peaceful protesters and demand that those responsible be brought to justice.

The right to protest is protected in the Nigerian constitution and in the Human Rights Charter. This right must be respected by the Nigerian government and its security agencies.
